Green Roofs
Green Roofs
A green sedum roof will give great pleasure to watch as it grows and develops and is very long-lasting when properly cared for. For garden offices or garden studios, to be used throughout the year, a green roof offers excellent insulation properties, reducing the power required for heating and air-conditioning. A green roof also absorbs rainwater and, importantly, attracts beneficial garden wildlife such as butterflies, ladybirds & bees.
Benefits of a Green Sedum Roof
- Can help to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere
- A haven for wildlife
- Suitable for sun or partial shade
- Improved temperature regulation and thermal insulation (cool in summer – warm in winter) thus reducing the power required for heating an air-conditioning
- Designed to outlast traditional roofing materials
- Provides some sound insulation
- Frost hardy
Design & installation of your green roof
A green roof will need to be specified at the design stage of your garden building to enable us to add any additional strengthening if required.
The installation team will install a waterproof membrane (EPDM) with a drainage outlet (ideal for rainwater harvesting). On top of the waterproof membrane, a drainage board with a moisture retentive fleece & weed suppressant is fitted to ensure a steady supply of water to the roots and prevent water runoff. Next, a layer of growing medium is installed, followed by a pre-grown sedum blanket.
Sedum Blend - The most sustainable light weight, growing medium on the planet
Hespanicum. Flowers like no other plant. Bees go mad for it. Nice ground cover. Changes colour with every season. Excellent winter coverage.
Reflexum. Blue spruce clump former. Bullet proof strength. Incredibly slow growing but one of the most impressive flowers of any sedum.
Album Coral Carpet. One of the top three for toughness and the back bone of the blanket. It can flower through months of drought and maintain excellent winter colour and coverage. Attracts butterflies and ladybirds.
Sedum Roof System
Sedum Blanket
Our plant selection enables the best year-round performance with the least aftercare. Grown on a bio-degradable coir blanket. Allowing the plants to move around the roof with no unnatural barriers.
Extensive Lightweight Substrate
No Peat, no brick, no green waste. We have blended our own growing medium using only the very best raw materials. Even our own well water. To make an ultralight, highly sustainable, free draining, substrate with food for the plants. Our medium now provides our plants with vibrant and healthy growth all year round.
Natural Drainage
Natural, sustainable, hydroponic clay aggregate. Inert, lightweight, superb for plant growth and rooting structure. Blended into the substrate for optimum drainage on a roof. We don’t use the plastic drainage layer anymore. We now use something better for the environment and better for the green roof.
